Season Preview: NFC South

So the NFL’s Western Conferences aren’t exactly stellar.  They are probably going to wind up being two of the three worst Conferences in the whole league.  Rounding out the bottom three is the NFC South.  Granted, this division is home to the Defending Super Bowl Champions.  It’s those other three teams that have been and will continue to be hilariously bad.

New Orleans Saints (13-3) – Repeating as Super Bowl Champions is about a hard a thing there is for a team to do in sports.  This team has the talent and meddle to do it.  They probably won’t, but they also won’t be denied the division.  Not against this weak competition.  They’ve got a tough out of conference schedule, which means they’ll be tested, which is good come playoff time, but for the regular season, there is a ceiling of 14 wins.

The Atlanta Falcons (9-7) – This team underachieved a little last year, and a lot of that can be blamed on Michael Turner’s injury.  Running backs seldom fully recover from any injury, so don’t expect Turner to be a major factor this year either.  Matt Ryan is still on his way to being a stud, and they’ve got some good pieces, hence the winning record.  But this team misses the playoffs in 2010-11.

The Carolina Panthers (4-12) – The Steve Smith injury may hurt a little, though he is not expected to miss any regular season games because of it.  The fact that this team has Matt Moore or Jimmy Clausen as quarterback does not bode well.  They’ve got one of the great two pronged running attacks in Jonathan Stewart and DeAngelo Williams, and that lets them beat some of the worst teams.  I would be surprised if this team even sniffed a .500 season.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers  (2-14) = This is the worst team in the NFC.  They had 3 wins last year, two of them surprising wins against playoff teams.  They won’t sneak up on anyone this year, and the fact of the matter is, there is not one offensive player on the roster that scares anyone.  They are the first team in history to have a starting QB and a back-up QB named Josh, (probably) but the very fact that this is the most interesting aspect of the team speaks to how awful they will be.  They can win in week 1, before the Browns get their feet on the ground.  They might also pull of a week 17 win against a Saints team that won’t need it.  At best, this is a 4 win team.
